The Magic of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been buzzing in the news lately, people have been flocking to their local health food store to get some, and it is now known as a "superfood".  So, is coconut oil worth buying, or is it just another diet fad that will soon die out?

Over the years, we have been conditioned to stay away from fats at all costs, but things are changing now, especially in regards to consuming certain kinds of fats - monounsaturated and polyunsaturated.  Your question now might be:  so what about Saturated fat?  Coconut oil is high in saturated fat; it supplies 12 grams per 14 gram serving size, making it nearly all saturated.  But wait, isn't saturated fat BAD?!  Not in the case of coconut oil it isn't!  In fact, coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides (fat molecules) instead of long chain, which actually supply the body with readily available energy!

Below are some fun facts/uses for coconut oil:

  1. Mixed with coffee for a great boost of energy instead of cream/sugar (one of the few ways I drink my coffee)
  2. Mix with equal parts of sugar for a smoothing body scrub in the shower
  3. Blend one tablespoon into hot tea to help alleviate flu symptoms
  4. Immediate source of energy that will not be stored as fat when consumed
  5. It is anti-inflammatory and can help with arthritis, colitis, and other inflammatory diseases
  6. Make homemade coconut oil bar soap
  7. Replace other oils in your diet with coconut oil for its health benefits
  8. When used regularly coconut oil can help boost hormone levels
  9. Speeds up metabolism when used regularly (1-2 TBSP per day)
  10. Add into smoothies for a nice creamy texture/more flavor

Coconut oil has so many uses as well.  It can be used to treat wounds, condition hair, moisturize skin, sunscreen, as an appetite suppressant, to fight bacterial infections, and so much more!  So if you haven't started using coconut oil in your diet yet you should definitely start now!
